History

In 1882 The Pack Horse Inn was auctioned for the grand sum of £180,000. At the time it was a single story building and remained so until 1904 when it was demolished and for 18 months the license continued in a wooden hut at the rear of the building work! A Belgian firm undertook the booking work and the builder were Flemish and could not speak English. A 12 Year old boy was bought in to supervise work; Maee Marshall’s and Golding of Knowsley Street Bolton Make Buildings and fittings.  In 1949 the Levers Arms Hotel was demolished to make way for the new extension to the hotel. In 1952 the extension to the Pack Horse Hotel was opened (the section overlooking Nelson Square) and included provision for 33 bedroom and a new restaurant to seat 130 people. In 1961 the hotel owner Magee Marshall bought the old reform club and demolished it (This was located at the opposite end of the Packhorse, on the Bowkers Row.) It had previously been used as a Magistrates Court, Coroners Court and Police office, This became another extension of the hotel, adding 18 Deluxe bedrooms each with a private bath. The accommodation to the date April 8th 1965 is 41 letting bedrooms. The additional rooms on the new wing brought the total to 59 bedrooms. A large brewing company called Greenall Whitley bought the hotel. In 1984 Greenall Whitley purchased the De Vere Hotel Group. During this time the extensions of bedrooms over Crompton Place Shopping Centre was constructed. This is still known as the “new wing” by the hotel staff. In 1995 McDonald Hotel Group bought the hotel and carried out a refurbishment programme. The Local MP unveiled a plaque to commemorate the end of the refurbishment. The hotel was sold by the McDonald  Group to a Building Management company called Vermont Holdings. During their tenure of the property a landmark was made in the ground floor section of the original Pack Hotel was leased to a company called Barracuda. This is now no longer part of the PackHorse Hotel on the ground floor level.  JJ Hotel acquired The Pack Horse in August 2003. Our goal is to bring back The Pack Horse to its ‘local heritage’, and make it a hotel for the people of Bolton.
